EXT. FAMILY HOUSE - DAY
LUBNA (14, girl) leans against the door jam of her suburban house. She has cerebral palsy. Her left side is crumpled, and the house is holding her up. An ambulance siren shrieks in the distance. A shocked Lubna watches as the ambulance pulls away.
LUBNA (V.O)
My mom was perfect.
The ambulance races away. Lubna sinks to sit on the doorstep.
LUBNA (V.O) (CONT’D)
I mean like, Disney Princess perfect.
INT. HOSPITAL ROOM - NEW YEAR’S EVE, 40 YEARS AGO
A super beautiful baby girl is held up as an ornate clock strikes midnight.
LUBNA (V.O.)
She was born on New Year’s Eve, at exactly midnight——no seconds.
INT. NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTY - Midnight
JELLEELA (now 7) dances the night away, stopping for the countdown.
LUBNA(V.O.)
She celebrates her birthday on both days: New Year’s Eve, and then, again, on New Year’s Day, because why not.
A crowd counts down.
CROWD
5, 4, 3, 2...Happy Birthday, Jelleela!
EXT. ROOFTOP BRUNCH RESTAURANT - DAY
Jelleela sits at a rooftop brunch with women who are clearly her family members, one of whom is obviously her mom, SITO (20’s, woman)
LUBNA (V.O)
My mom wasn’t just perfect. She was an overachiever.
INT. THEATRE STAGE - EVENING
A 10 year-old Jelleela performs ballet en pointe. She receives a standing ovation.
INT. SCHOOL AUDITORIUM - DAY
A tween Jelleela (13) is covered in merit badges. She is a scout of some sort.
INT. HIGH SCHOOL CAFETERIA - DAY
A teen Jelleela (17) is handed a golden gavel. She has won a debate.
LUBNA (V.O.)
She was valedictorian of her high school and her university.
EXT. UNIVERSITY COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY - DAY
Jaleela (21) is introduced at her college graduation.
PROFESSOR
Not only is this extraordinary student valedictorian, but she also got her M.D./PhD in three-and-a half years!
Jelleela, front and center of her graduating class throws her cap into the air. The college Dean, a dashing, Ryan Gosling-looking gentleman, MIKE (43, Man) catches it. Their eyes meet.
LUBNA (V.O.)
My mom swears the moment she met my dad was magic. She also swears that even though he was the dean of her college, she never met him before graduation day. My dad swept my mom off of her feet.
Mike spins Jelleela around in her graduation gown. They obviously know each other.
